Fly Little Bird Fly or Your New Empty Nest

My youngest son is in his senior year of high school. We survived applying to colleges. We have not survived acceptances or rejections yet. We wait anxiously. I can tell my son is worried and my heart aches because there is nothing I can do about the outcome. I dread the thought of him being rejected by the school of his dreams. On a more positive note I won't have to nag him about getting his applications in on time. Suddenly a sense of calm comes over me. This time next year I will join the ranks of other "Empty Nesters". My home will actually be quiet. As I wrap my head around the concept of having no children in the home for most of the year, I contemplate the out come:

Top 10 Reasons To Celebrate Your New Empty Nest

1. No More Teachers No More Books

How wonderful never having to worry about open house at your child's school EVER AGAIN! No more parent teacher conferences, PTA meetings or award ceremonies.

2. Less Laundry

I don't know about your children, but just when i am folding the last towel my son gathers up all of his laundry from his closet and piles it on top of the dryer!

3. No more Axe products.

Come on you know that smell, not quite cologne, sometimes over powering.

4. Good bye Cookie Dough ice cream

Bleck what is that?

5. No more curfews

You can stay out as late as you want because you do not have to wait for them to come home.

6. Poof!! Halo is gone.

Enjoy the absence of explosions in your living room.

7. No more adjusting the mirrors and seats in YOUR car. No more empty slurpie cups in YOUR cup holder, no more uneaten lunches (that you made with such love)in the back seat.

The car is all YOURS.

8. No more stories about who did what to whom at lunch.

Hmm I kind of like those moments.

9. No more surprises when you go to the restroom and find out that the nearest toilet paper is under the sink.

You are in control of the toilet paper now!

10. No more listening to the latest music.

Hmmm, I really enjoy that too.

After reading over my list I realize our homes may seem serene when they leave, but I think when the time comes it will be difficult to let go. We will long for them to stay, our hearts break just a little. On the other hand, we want them to go, we want them to sore, into their future.

Senior year prepares us for their flight. By June they are ready to leave and sometimes (especially when you are trying to answer the question "Why?" for the millionth time) you wish they would go already.

When the day finally arrives it's bittersweet to watch your little bird grow up and fly towards their dreams.Don't worry in no time at all they will comeback, dirty laundry and all, but somehow the pile won't seem so big anymore.
