What to Expect As a New Mom

Expect to be tired: No, not just tired - exhausted! Between all of the feedings, diaper changes and piles of laundry, you might feel that you don't have any time to sleep anymore. And just when you get to sleep, your little one will wake up for another feeding. You can sleep when the baby sleeps, but know that this will be fragmented and you will still feel tired most days. The good news is that this only lasts for the first few months; after that, your baby will start sleeping through the night and you can get back to your old sleep patterns.

Be prepared for the Baby Blues: Experts estimate that up to 80% of new moms deal with some sort of post-partum depression. This is perfectly normal and is part of the hormonal changes in your body. These are temporary and last only about a week or so. It is NOT normal to have thoughts of suicide or harming the baby. If you experience this, talk to your doctor or health care provider immediately.

Expect Lots of Advice: You will get 'expert' advice from just about everyone from your mother-in-law to the stranger on the street. Smile and nod, and thank them; after all they mean well. Then, do what you think is best for you and your baby. If you take everyone's advice, you'll find yourself spinning in circles and more confused than ever.

Expect Lots of Visitors: Friends and family will obviously want to stop in and meet your new little bundle of joy. Let them come - but don't think you have to do a marathon of cleaning before each visit or serve a 4-course meal for your guests. Most visitors will keep things short and sweet. They will also likely bring a gift; keep track of who brings what and have a stack of thank you cards to fill out when you have time.

Expect to be amazed: Cherish this time with your baby and know that, while you may not be perfect, your baby loves and trusts you. This is the ideal time for bonding and sets the stage for years to come. Enjoy your little one and prepare to be amazed at how quickly they learn and grow. Being a mom is really hard work, but it's also the most rewarding job there is. Absolutely nothing else compares to the joys of motherhood!
